why do people make shit arguments against queer representation by saying things like “the percentage of lgbt people in the population isn’t that high” well neither is the percentage of vampires but we see plenty of them in our media dont we
i watch a lot of vampire tv. so trust me on this one. the people who write these shows and movies are ALWAYS using vampirism as a metaphor for otherness and do so by using white, cisgendered men. like. this isn’t almost always this is ALWAYS. literally 0 exceptions.
i know everyone knows that, but i’m feelin v. angry about media rn
all this outpouring of grief for one actor. where were y’all for michael brown? renisha mcbride? the genocide victims in burma, gaza, and near iraq? not to detract from mr. williams’s legacy (may he r.i.p. of course) but… where are YOUR priorities? who do you…
i like to stay away from really any sort of deep subject on my blog, but guys this is important. the person who replied first here doesn’t really seem to understand that the news coverage for these other victims is in direct competition with the news coverage for williams. in fact, his death crashed the TMZ servers earlier today. You know whose deaths are not breaking down servers and taking over media platforms…see above for list.
this is really wonderful opportunity to speak on a lot of issues, including the psychosocial motives behind why we consider celebrities so close to us and dissecting the way media plays a part in this.
i just want to note that tomorrow is the UNs International Youth Day [x] which focuses on mental health and children and adolescents. Remember children in regions with heightened violence, children with reinforced negative self perceptions and children in impoverished areas are more susceptible to mental illness. i wanted to make a note of this bc it’s something v. close to my heart.
I think an upside to Williams suicide, which i note with only the upmost respect for him as an individual and great sympathy for those who loved him, is a heightened awareness of suicide prevention and mental illness. Don’t forget that while these can affect anyone, the people listed in the original post are those who need help the most.
Long story short. This is a competition for attention and awareness.
